Geofoam is a term that was adopted by the geotechnical industry to describe a class of light weight fill made primarily from polymeric foams, such as expanded extruded and expanded molded polystyrene.
Expanded Molded Polystyrene foam, or EPS is the most widely used Geofoam in geotechnical applications today.
EPS Geofoam in its most basic use:
- Reduces vertical stresses on underlying soils and substrates.
- Reduces lateral stresses to vertical surface planes, both structural or non-structural.
The reason why EPS Geofoam works exceptionally well to reduce vertical stresses is due to the fact that it is a “super” light weight fill. In the various type ranges of EPS Geofoam that are most commonly use in geotechnical applications, EPS Geofoam’s weight is less than 1 to 3% of traditional earth materials.
EPS Geofoam is an Engineered and factory produced product and thus has known and reliable physical properties
